2) In the middle of flights and pickups, everyone please give me a few days to get everything sent out and done.. I was to be going to a show this weekend but will be staying home to get everything done and settled.
3)Computer internet is acting up and for hours on end, we can't connect and then won't stay connected, don't know why.. behind on emails as always :)
4)Been on and off with puppy flights and pickups, and thurdays and Friday are crazy booked, so if need me, let me know and will email or call if needed for this weekend..

Hello Folks

All the puppies now have their new tattoo's done.. there are a number of reasons that I have gone back to tattoo's a) the microchips being used in Canada, don't seem to be readable in the States and I hate the puppies being double chipped.. this way you can use the local readable chip if you desire.. but my main reason for going back to tattoo's, is that many of the company's that own the microchips now charge a yearly fee for them.. that is not fair at all to my puppy owners.

Please feel free to microchip your puppies if you want when you get them..

Pearl Litter -CERF Results

The Pearls went for their formal CERF tests yesterday and I am thrilled to say! that they all got NORMAL results on both eyes.. just wonderful..

All four puppies Normal-June 2010

That means that the puppies are normal, the parents newest tests in April of 2010, both normal, all the grandparents last tests were normal, Four of the Great-Grandparents tested, and all normal..

So to date this is a Four gen CERF tested Litter! Awesome!

Earthquake News 5.1

Hi Folks

As a number of folks know, we had the largest Earthquake in our area in over a hundred years yesterday afternoon, it was very! clearly felt and shook the house, knocking down rocks in display cases, and rattling windows, pictures and causing my metal roof to pop up and down with a huge very scary bang.. We have a small hairline crack in two ends of one of our buildings but overall, we got off very easy compared to many others.

Hubby was evacated out of his work building, which appears to have a few parts shook off of it..

The dogs were excited before (perhaps the knew something was up) but when it happened.. everyone was dancing and barking including the puppies.. and then all followed me from place to place as I checked the house.. A few times last night, for no reason we could feel.. all the dogs would jump up and bark.. Aftershocks?

Anyway these are some well rounded storm puppies, we have had windstorms, multiply Thunderstorms and now a Earthquake.

We had rain last night and most of today and the puppies were just mucky little puppies, so we did a marathon bath, all pups in the tub, one wetting and one scrubbing and then taking turns rinsing.. It was so funny.. we put down huge towels on the floor and they all had puppy wet bath zoomies all over them.. but wow the humidity was already at 98 percent, so took the floors forever to dry out.. thankfully we have lots of fans to turn on across the house to get that air moving..

They say we are going to have sunshine this weekend, so expect a ton of new photos to come up shortly there after.

Greenstone Blackmore Knight CD

This weekend has been crazy busy.. Greenstone Grima Gloa was BOB both days at the Kingston Kennel Club shows, Greenstone Blackmore Knight owned by Vari attended two obedience trials and earned her CD title, she was the top ISD in conformation last year and now will move forward in her obediance training. Meant to have the Herding tests done on the oldest litter but thankfully its not timing related the same way as the temperment tests or structure evals, so have some give on the timing and will do soon this coming week.. worn new shoes and while they looked great, they have given me multiple blisters that have broken open and so my heals are raw at the moment.. so will be taking sunday evening easy..

Baer Test Information.

Hi Folks

Well, I was aware that the line that Sweet Dreams is out of on his Sire's side had related dogs that had produced mainly (or almost totally white) puppies that have been confirmed either full deaf and or with limited hearing range. It is believed to be linked within our Icelandic Sheepdogs with the Piebald Spotting Gene. Before yesterday, only two breeders had taken their suspected puppies/dogs or litters to be tested.. (Big Thanks to Sharon at Belglen's Kennel in Sask and to Valhalla Kennel in Washington, USA for not only testing but sharing their information with the ISD breeder world-wide)

Folda had never had pied puppies before and I was concerned about 3 of her puppies in the current litter, DayDream Believer (total white head), Dreamboat, Pied, and Technicolor DreamCoat, Pied on one side, and white on the other. The other puppies appear to me to be gene wise Irish Spotted, with is not! known to cause deafness in some cases.

Icelandic Sheepdogs can carry or have the Piebald Spotting Gene (think like a Pinto or Paint horse, large patches of color on the body or if the gene is doubled.. very little patches of white on body)

It is called the Piebald Spotting Gene (S^p - non-symmetrical random white pattern). This pattern does not always cause deafness, it is only a problem when the inner ear is missing pigment

So I hunted down to closest Baer Testing to me, (about a four hour drive in total, not so much because of distance, should have only been three but because of bumper to bumper traffic in montreal both coming and going)

The tests was performed at the CHUV by DMV ACVIM Neurology, and I send a huge Thank you out to both Susy and Dr Parent for fitting me in as she is a full time Prof and does not take many cases at this time.

What is BAER testing?

A BAER test is the only 100% reliable method for determining that a dog is deaf (or for measuring the extent of its hearing loss). BAER (pronounced "bear") stands for "Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response" and is a procedure using computers to record the electrical activity of the brain in response to sound stimulation. This is the same test used to check the hearing of human infants, and measures the same range of hearing. This means that the test does not measure the full range of canine hearing, but it will tell you if your dog has hearing within the normal human range (some dogs will test as "deaf," but will still be able to hear very high pitches).

The test is not painful and can be performed on any dog over six weeks of age. (A puppy's ear canals don't open until they are about two weeks old.) Sedation is usually not necessary, but some dogs (especially puppies) don't like being restrained, or having wires hang from their face, so it can be performed while the dog is sedated. A clicking sound is directed into the ear through a foam insert, earphones, or headphones and the brain's response is recorded. Each ear is tested individually and the test generally lasts for only 10 to 15 minutes.

Since BAER testing is only available at select facilities and can be expensive, many people choose to rely on their own experiences with the dog and the opinion of their veterinarian in making the determination. For their own peace of mind, or because they are breeding a "high-risk" dog (like the Dalmatian), others insist on this testing.

Dreamboat has perfect hearing Bilaternally (both ears), he was a handfull until we let him go down, he need the pee-pee pad and then took his test very well.. The test is repeated twice in each ear for solid proof.

DayDream Believer has Perfert Hearing Bilaternally (Both Ears) she did the test like it was a peice of cake. I don't believe that she is in fact Pied but no one had ever tested a Full white head (controlled by a different gene) and I thought it was good idea to check her.

Technicolor Dreamcoat has perfect earing her in white ear on the right side of her head and very! limited hearing on her colored ear and side of face.. she failed the first seven out of nine tests as deaf and only on test eight and nine (with each test getting louder) did we finally see some respond from her.. You will see the clear diffence in her paperwork when you look at it as well. As she has Perfect hearing on one ear, her limited hearing in the other ear will not effect her ability to function as a normal.

So there you have it folks.. Proof yet again that YES, within the Icelandic Sheepdog that Piebald Gene Puppies or Dogs CAN have proven Limited or Deaf Dogs within our breed caused by this gene.. I HIGHLY recommend that if you are looking for a possable Show/Breeding puppy and its Pied, that you consider having its hearing checked before either buying it or breeding it.

If you do choose to breed piebald Icelandic Sheepdogs and produce puppies with limited body color and lots of white , it might be a good idea to check their hearing before placing them..

GENERAL APPEARANCE: The Icelandic Sheepdog is a Nordic herding spitz, slightly under medium sized with prick ears and a curled tail. Seen from the side the dog is rectangular; the length of the body from the point of shoulder to point of buttock is greater than the height at withers. The depth of the chest is equal to the length of the foreleg. The expression is gentle, intelligent and happy. A confident and lively bearing is typical for this dog. Ears: Erect and of medium size. Triangular with firm edges and slightly rounded tips. Very mobile, reacting sensitively to sound and showing the dog’s mood.
Dew claws: Well-developed double dewclaws are desirable

TAIL: High set, curled over and touching the back.

FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree.: A solid black mantle or saddle on any of the various tan coloured dogs.

SERIOUS FAULTS: : Lack of dewclaws.: Yellow eyes: Round protruding eyes.

Herding Temperment Test for Icelandic Sheepdog Puppies!

When I got my Icelandic Sheepdogs I was very excited that they were a herding breed, my grandfather on my mothers side had breed, raised, trained and used Collies on his farm for year, and his dogs were most sought after. I can still remember Grandpa explaining what made a good dog, and I have to admit that I to this day still look for those very same things in my own dogs.

On my father's side of the family, they owned a huge thousand head of sheep farm in southern Alberta and Border Collies were the dogs of choice, so I was familar with both the more upright style of herding that a Collie will use and the more traditional Border style of working sheep but the first question I asked was "what does a Icelandic Sheepdog Herd like?"

In keeping with this I called Iceland and different owners of dogs that lived and worked the dogs on both sheep/horses, I also called and visited with Icelandic Breeders and owners in both Canada, and the US, that had both Icelandic Sheep and Icelandic Sheepdogs on their farms, and was surprised to no end, when in a nut shell, I was informed by both in Iceland and across North America that the dogs didn't really herd.

The first thing that surprised me was how little time is spent herding or even driving sheep in Iceland with the dogs, this is because the sheep are a) low flocking, and b) turned out into the mountains to graze etc, in fact it became clear that they were used more on the horse thoughtout the year then they were used on the sheep at this time in the breeds history.

But what did come out clearly was this a) they are natural herders, they are not normally trained per say in Iceland, b) they had for hundred of years been used as natural boundry tenders, as fences have only appears in the last while in Iceland and so the dogs were used to keep the hay meadows clear of the sheep and horses etc and would drive them back up in to the hills. c) that they are a natural driving breed, and are what is in North America called a loose eyed, upright barking breed.

Every year on our little farm , I use the dogs for boundry tending, , I walk with my Icelandic and show her the line, and then we sit and write or read a book or in Jason's case, he will often take his laptop out, and we just hang out while the sheep graze, until someone gets to close to the "line" and my ISD will look at me, and I say, Go push them back and they up like a flash and drive the herd back into the center of the hay pasture and then back to me to lay down in the shade of the chair, until needed again.

I think the second thing I use them for most is very close work in the barn, moving the sheep from pen to pen, moving them past the gate that they know has the grain feed in it, and also to help split the flock up, in case I need to check or work with one of the sheep. It is such a pleasure to be able to open the front door and say to my dog or dogs, Sheep, Barn, and by the time I have walked to the barn from the house, the dogs will have gone to the field, got the sheep, and driven them into the barn and into their back pens and will be waiting for me to close the gates.

I can see why a good sheepdog was worth its weight in gold, I have heard from many folks in Iceland that the dogs can be used to find lost sheep under snow, I believe this totally, as they often help me find but not hurt my new chicks in the barn, they will also let me know if anything is new in the barn by finding and trailing the scent, I know that some folks say that a Icelandic would not hurt anything small. I can't agree, my dogs learn what is part of the farm, and leave it alone, but mice, moles, rats, and wild birds are fair game, and the dogs will hunt the hay fields like a fox would, I have spoke to other breeders in Iceland and they confirm that their Icelandic also hunt the barns for mice, so I believe that this is something that is likely to be seen in our dogs here in N.A.

In keeping with this, if you go to a training center, if and when asked what they herd like, I have learned to say, they are most Austrian Shepards in terms of what breed they herd like.

While I had brought in Icelandic's directly imported from Iceland who had working parents, I really wanted to work my own dogs and I also wanted to make sure that I kept the breed natural herding drive and ability alive in my kennel, so from my very first litter, I have done herding tests on the puppies with the ducks, I still remember introducing Greenstone Ada to the ducks at ten weeks old and being amazed to watch her show off her natural ablitites, since then I have created a much more formal test to my kennels records.

I would never recommend that you test six to ten week old puppies on anything other then ducks, I have heard that one lady did bring a well dog broke mini goat to the breeders home in the US to see which of the puppies had the most natural drive. You need to be careful and make sure that those first intro's are done in a safe and controlled manner.

Thank you Cheryl for sharing this info on our ISD yahoo groups, I did feel that it was important to put up on the puppy blog, I don't know if anyone was planning on feeding this food but in case they were, please consider waiting till your dog is an adult or choosing a different brand of food.

I'm not merely passing this info along second hand, this is my experience with my dogs.

Two of my dogs, a 11 week old ISD puppy and my 7 month old Chinese Crested Sully developed partial digestive system blockages apparently from eating Purina's new SmartBlend foods. The new food has been on the shelves for approximately 2 weeks and we've been feeding it for about 7 to 10 days.

I have x-rays taken yesterday that appear to confirm that the new "tender meaty morsels" are causing a partial blockage in 2 of my smaller dogs. My vet agreed that it appeared to be the new "tender meaty morsels" that were causing the problem even though her pre x-ray opinion was that it couldn't be the food. All her plans for all sorts of tests were immediately cancelled after viewing the x-ray.

The new "tender meaty morsels" are very rubbery in texture and don't change much even after soaked in water for 8 hours. Even when soaked for hours they were difficult to break up well even using a fingernail.

My smart little ISD puppy, Tofa, alerted me to the apparent cause of her distress when she ate around the new "tender meaty morsels" yesterday morning after suffering with severe digestive tract distress for the previous 24 hours. My puppies typically act like every meal may be their last and gulp everything down and plead for more. Leaving food behind was very unusual. Her appetite had remained good even while experiencing the digestive distress.

I got out the bag and read it after Tofa gave me a not so subtle clue as to the potential source of her distress. Did I miss something, did they not recommend that this new formula be fed to puppies? Nope right on the new bag it stated... "start puppies on Purina ONE as early as they will nibble at solid foods, generally three to four weeks of age.....".

I begin switching all my puppies to adult food at 7 to 8 weeks after Pat Hastings suggested while evaluating my 2007 litter that no puppies be fed puppy specific foods....ever.

In spite of the fact that Tofa had not held down any food for nearly 18 hours the x-ray showed her stomach quite full (the vet said her stomach was over full taking up much more space than it should) of what appeared to be the rubbery "tender meaty morsels". Her intestines also contained areas of what looked just like the rubbery "tender meaty morsels" mixed with pockets of gas. The only thing that had been moving past all this was very watery diarrhea the color of the more digestible kibble propelled by gas, IOW projectile liquid diarrhea.

The first symptoms with Tofa were watery diarrhea. About 24 hours later she started vomiting all food after which the diarrhea and basically all bowel movements stopped, yet her appetite, color, temperature and attitude remained good other than some initial signs of discomfort.

Tofa finally kept her dinner down last night (we changed food) and so far has kept her breakfast down today, and at 2 am last night she finally had a normal stool! YAY!!

My poor chinese crested Sully is still having liquid diarrhea, vomiting all food and is very uncomfortable. It hurts me to know that it appears the food I gave him is hurting him.

Purina wants (me?) to believe I caused the problem by not doing a gradual enough transition to the new food. Well that's kind of difficult when you open the new bag and go holy crap what is this?! We did mix what we had left of the old formula with the new, but yeah, it wasn't 10% new 90% old day 1, 20/80 day 2, 30/70 day 3, etc.... 10 day transition like they said I should have done.

I've feed a LOT of dogs a LOT of food for a LOT of years. I've switch back and forth between Purina products and even a few other brands over the years and never had a problem with or without a 50/50 for a couple of days switch over.

Needless to say we did an immediate switch to new food, NO transition period, yesterday evening and Tofa has shown nothing but immediate improvement. My poor Sully still needs to turn the corner.

My vet feels that they will digest the food just very slowly. So I'll monitor Sully for signs he's worsening rather than improving and seek help immediately if needed. Thank goodness we finally have an after hours emergency vet in a nearby town.

Anyhow I just want to warn those of you with small or young dogs to feed the new Purina SmartBlend foods with caution or not at all until this is all sorted out.

PS I just took out my sweet Chinese Crested Sully and he had what started as a gooey bowel movement changing to almost a formed stool, a huge improvement over the squirting liquid diarrhea he has had for the previous 24 hours! Apparently the sudden change in food last night was a good move! So much for me making a not gradual enough change in Purina One to Purina One being the source of my poor babies' distress or in other words partial blockages!

Hi Guys

As someone with a lot of dogs, I am always on the look out for things for the dogs to chew, I love bully sticks and can remember when I could get a full case of uncut ones for around a hundred dollars, that same case now would be more like a couple hundred, if you could even find it.

I have a deal with the local butcher for "soup" bones for the dogs, that I get so many pds, and I swear I have tried every dog chew toy known with the dogs, some they like, some they like but can chew though way! to easy and some they don't like.

I make lot of my own treats, but when I found these, I liked the idea of them, as they are all natural, and the dogs used to find and chew on Cariboo shed horns in the Artic, and they last a long! time.

So I used the company below, as they seemed to have the most reasonable prices, and came recommended by other ISD owners that had used them.

My order came quickly and was done correctly and the dogs LOVE THEM, the puppies have been chewing on them off and on, the adults appear to really like them, and so far, after many hours of chews, you can barely see a dent, and then only by the big adults, the ones that the pups have had, don't show any real wear at all, so I think they might just like up to the idea of being a Long last chew.

If you are looking for a few things to get ahead of time for your puppies, this is one that I would recommend, unless you are lucky enough to find some natural ones out in your local woods, in which case, pack them on out for your lucky puppy.

Hi Guys

I know that folks are waiting for photos but its been raining all night and into this afternoon, the sheep did a break out, and so thanks to a wonderful sheep dog, they were rounded up (out of the next door hay field) and put back into the barn, got to fix fence in the rain, soaked to the bone and now a big thunderstorm is moving, so no outside photos of the puppies today and to grey and overcast for house photos.. so to tide everyone over.. a bed full of pups after their latest time outside getting wet.

I always find it amazing that some days the photos come so easy and others you can try every trick in the book and you just get bits and peices in different photos.. well that is how I feel about this set, I love the stack on the one with her tail down but the grey outside and lighting washes out her real color and the other ones are better on color but not as good on the stack.. So be it.. Will try and get photos outside after it stops raining.

Dreams on Fire vs the Dark Leghorn Hen

Morning Folks

Well, lets see so far today we introduced a new footing surface, (being a old fridge grate) to that they are walking over and play on and off small wire footing, it also rocks slightly, the pups now have free run of the deck off the kitchen and are able to do both steps up and down on their own, and seem to be quite enjoying their new outdoor room

The other new thing this morning, was that while floors are drying, I took sets of two puppies out for short little yard walks, the idea being instead having the comfort of the whole puppy pack, they got much more one on one time, and instead of being just allowed to play as they wish, I called them to follow me as I walked to the garden, and did morning chores with the other critters (not the barn, its to far of a walk yet for any of them)

Its always so interesting to me on how each puppy reacts to being away from the main pack and in dealing and learning with new things, some of the bolder pups in the house become the sucky stick to you or look to you to see how to deal with things, while pups that seem more laid back in the house come out of their shells when given the chance.

So the two pups that were out where Fire and Cal, and both were keeping up well and exploring different things on the way.. chew this, climb the rock, roll in the nice dewy wet grass, carry a twig, fight over twig, attach the flowers etc

I look up and realize that on my last round of putting out fresh water in the chicken pen, I had left the gate open just a little bit and I have a few smaller hens that are now out and scatching up a storm around the rabbit hutches

So I walk back to the other end of the building to open the chicken pen so that everyone can get back in and Cal comes with me.. but Fire.. o no.. he spots the chickens, and runs to get to them.. I took photos, sorry the first one is so blurry, but I was quite a good distance away from him, they get better as I get closer.

So here is the play by play.. See's Chickens, Runs straight at them, stops about eight feet, tail up, looking at all three of them.. starts barkings at them.. The two hens split off to the right.. he stays on the main hen (my Dark Leghorn Hen), and in the photos, you can see him coming in on her (Photo One), Photo Two, he is so! pushing her flight zone, still barking, still upright, still got tail up and over back, totally bold little bugger.. Third photo, He pushed in on her to the point she flies right over his head, he looks around.. so proud of himself and runs right back to me and hits this pose, Which to me looks like very much like..

That was so fun.. what next?

Bath Day for the Icelandic Sheepdog Puppies

Thought you might like to see what Freyja looked like at nine weeks of age, here she is free-stacking out in the sheep pasture.

Hi Guys

Well, lets see what is new today, a couple of the younger puppies found and got into a cat poo this morning.. ekk, so everyone got baths, which then needed to be dried as they were sure they were so! cold afterwards (not, its up in the 20's but they played if for all they are worth)

The rest of the crew on the other hand, loved their new toys today.. which were, a new doggy ball with four rope ends so more then one can play at the same time, a new homemade tug toy made from fake fur, and last but not least a big plastic cutting board, that has a lift on each end, so that the middle is a baby wobble board under their feet.

On the training end of things, all the puppies got time today on the grooming table and the steel comb run over their body and a brief stacking training.. Its been a nice, quiet grey overcast, little rain day.. lots of nice music for them.. the pups love rock (that would be J teaching them that) and they get to hear lots of voices etc as I like CBC on the radio but today we had in Celtic and it was so funny to watch them all react to the new sounds being played.

I am having a quiet day myself, feeling tired, and planning a early night for everyone.

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Alberta when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?"

Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?" The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASApage on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany .

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says Bud.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Introduced the collars to the oldest litter, they have little bells on them, tickle, tickle as they move and play, its cute for now, not sure if I will get the same ones for the younger litter in a week, introduced the clicker to the older puppies yesterday, wow are they chow hounds at the moment LOL, will work on them again with it today.. looks like they are old enough to get a certain amount of their kibble set aside for the day to work on behaviours.

I wanted to send out a congrats to Darren with his ISD girl, Greenstone Cinnamon Girl who just earned a combined total of 385.31 to be #20 out of 40 dogs in the 16th inch jump height at the ontario AAC Regionals finals. Congrats on all the great runs, hope you had lots of fun this past weekend at the event. Darren has a done an amazing job training this young lady.

So if you have ever wondered, can I try agility with my pup, the answer is YES.. consider having fun in one of the dog sports after you get your basic obedance training underway, its a great way to build a wonderful team between you and your dog!

Here is Myself and Ada on the dog walk, taking classes for the fun of it, is allowed, you don't have to train to the point trials if you don't want, its still a great way to spend time with your dogs out of the house.

Ahhh, its raining... and I'm Melting!

Ok, so we are finally getting some much needed rain and the reaction on behalf of the pups has been quite interesting.. the older litter plus two had water zoomies.. If you have dogs, and bathed them, you know what I am talking about.. the running, the sliding, the rubbing and the butt tucked under zoomie of joy, well the older litter loved the rain (I took them out under my big huge willow tree's so that it was as sheltered from the rain as I could get (still to wet for me to have the camera out sorry.. and just laughed at the ones that played and enjoyed the rain..

However the younger litter.. other then Cal and Dreamboat, who joined in the play in a more careful way, went.. NO.. what is this wet stuff.. get me out and were quite unhappy to be out in the rain.. so I brought them all back inside to the safety of the living room and then went back out to watch the playful older crew have a blast.. I finally brought them in when they started to look like soggy doggies, takes a good while for the water to get though that puppy coat, didn't want them to get a chill..

So the hit of the day when it came to toys was from the dollar store, they had this little bag of colored stuffed balls with a thing for kids to play a tossing game but they also sold the balls in a extra way.. six for one dollar and they are the perfect size and softness for the pups, they can chase them, carry them and toss them around.. so far, no one is chewing on them, just play and even starting to fetch and carry back to me, to play again -Good puppies.. Second major fun toy.. a one dollar big feather duster.. I run it along the ground and they chase and catch and tug and pull on it, my best so far.. five pups at once, got to try and get a photo of it.

and lets not forget their total favorite new toy.. the cardboard box, with holes cut in it from getting grocery's last night. While the stores come up with some amazing wonderful toys and I have a trunk full of them, never let be said that a puppy is fussy on having fun, be it a twig, a leaf, a cardboard box, a old water bottle with rock inside to rattle or a bought doggy toy.. joy can be found in all of them and many more..

Planned Icelandic Sheepdog Litters Fall 2010

I have been getting questions about when is my next planned litter for 2010, and I had planned on breeding Greenstone Ada (shown Above) next but she has come into heat in the end of May, and I am very sorry but the timing is just off for me. My current litters momma's came into their heats late, and Ada came in early, and they are just to close together for me, having puppies are alot of work, and I need a break between the litters, now remind me of that in a few months, when I am SO missing having little ones around.

I will not be breeding Ada on this current heat, I will be moving our next planned breeding till the fall of 2010. I will get a full planned litter page up on the main website and will update this page once I have more info to share, I am currently taking applications and reservations on this planned litter.

Morning Musings

Happy Monday Morning

So this weekend got out to the ottawa dogs shows, Sweet Dreams (the Dream litters daddy) took BOB on Saturday at the shows, and Grima Gloa (half sister by the same mother as the Dream litter) took BOB on Sunday and made the cut in group but no ribbons..

However in Related Show ISD news, Gold Rush in Valhalla owned by Llie in B.C. won his first Group placement a Group 3rd under CKC Judge Leslie Rogers! Way to go to this wondeful team, I was thrilled to have been sent photos of their ring time the weekend before this win and all I can say is that it was SO clear to me that they have such a loving bond. Congrat out to his co-owner and breeder Maragret at Valhalla Kennels in Washington.

So little Provocative in Pearls was out playing in the yard and found a little duck poo to roll in..yuck and so she got her first full bath and blowdry and I snapped a little photo of her, looking all puffy and sparkly, sorry that its dusky, and I didn't use the flash so a little dark.

The puppies are amazing to me, they are all up to their four meals a day and eating very well, and that means I am washing floors all the time and spend a great deal of time moving them in and out for bathroom/outside time.

Their develop is wonderful to see.. they are starting to play with their toys, and interact with with everything, the two litters got introduced together this weekend and at first the bigger older litter was a little bossy but then the younger litter seemed to figure out that numbers count LOL and they got a little bossy by ganging up, but now everyone is great friends, Minnie Pearl is heaven, finally all these friendly playmates just her size!

I was able to visit with fellow ISD owners at the Ottawa show and we introduced two females that had not seen each other for about eight months and it was so nice, they just loved each other like long lost friends, so nice to see the dogs meet and greet new dogs with such openness.

I was thrilled to be able to visit and introduce the breed to a number of AKC judges who were up for the shows, and they were able to have a hands on mini Judging seminar on the breed both days of the show, they were quite interested as the breed is moving over in AKC on July 1st and all the judges at the show have applied to be able to judge the breed, this was the first time that many of them had got to see the breed in person, a few had been to breed seminars in the states but still were interested in learning about the Canadian Dogs. I was pleased to hear so many nice comments from the judges on the quality of the dogs they got to meet this weekend, its so important to get that non-breed related feedback in regards to your breeding program.

Well the newly washed floor is dry now so on to more morning chores, have a great day..

Crate Training/Housebreaking Icelandic Sheepdog Puppies

Hi Folks

As many of you know having spoken to me in person, you are aware that I am a fan of correctly using a crate for help in housebreaking, if you can't watch the puppy and be there to read cue's having a safe place to put puppy is a awesome thing

Live example of just how EARLY a puppy can show signs of housebreaking, so as you can imagine, I am on extra floor washing duty and I use different cleaners for different things but my main rinse is normally hot water with bleach, and I don't like the pups on the floor when doing so

Adult dogs went into the kitchen (while doing the livingroom floors) and I woke up the oldest litter, let them have their wake up pee's outside and brought them in and crated them in their nap/feed/put away big crate in the living room (they can already climb over the side of whelping box)

Anyway, these little tikes are normally quite good about this but Prevocative in Pearls would not settle down, she was fussy, but I washed the floors and then turned on overhead fans and the big floor drying fan (takes about 15 min or so to dry the whole floor, and she was fussy the whole time.. I said at least three times.. " you know you don't get let out when making that kind of fuss" well the floor was dry and she was in the howl stage of let me out of this crate.. so I am standing there.. three sleeping, one fussing and waiting, for that one second of quiet/good behaviour that I can reward, when final she stops and looks at me with these wide eyes, and I take it, and open the door.. out she runs, two steps out of the crate and she goes #2..

First.. BAD, Bad me for not figuring out that this might have been the issue but WOW baby girl to have held on for close to twenty min and not mess your crate.. you rock little girl! Breeder Mom promises that she will listen to your cues better in the future.

So I stand by the fact that properly used crates are wonderful training tools for many things, and that its up to us to keep our little ones on schedules and to read their cues, and they will do their best to be clean for us, its breed into them to keep their Den and Area clean, its up to us to teach them that means the whole house :)

Was insteading on a good photo shoot this afternoon, big old thunderstorm and rain has moved in.. we could use the water to be truthful and it will take the heat down another notch.

So here are two cute photos of the little ones to tide you over till I can get more soon, don't know how but my battery was low, I guess I do use it alot.. anyway little Follow the Dream posed very sweety for the one photo but my favorite is little dream's grin..

He was playing with me and rolled on his back and I found his little spot, (you know, the one that makes them kick and grin and wiggle with joy all at the same time ) and I snapped this photo, laying down myself and from above, didn't even look to see if it was angled right or not.. anyway not perfect but his joy shines though it for me.

Well for those that are local and thinking of booking a puppy visiting time, we are opening up the weekends of June 19/20th (Booked Solid as of June 4th) and June 26/27th (still available visiting spots), so if you are interested in booking a time on those days, please email me and we will figure out a good time for a visit.

So Baer testing is being done on June 16th, Cerf for the oldest litter is booked for June 30th, and for the younger litter July 6th. Temperment tests are booked, June 11th for the oldest litter and June 18th for the younger litter. Herding Tests will take place on the weekend of 19th on the oldest litter and on the 26th for the youngest litter. Tattoo's are booked for the puppies at the end of June, and Structural evals are booked for the third and the last week of June for the puppies, I am having them looked at by a panel of three for a well rounded overview.

Puppy pick up dates for the oldest litter can start on July long weekend, and flyout dates the first week of July, Puppy Pickup dates for the youngest litter can start on July 10th and Flyout dates can start from the 12th on.

Please email me to let me know your perferred days and I will do my best to work with you on them.

Note-1 For those that are interested in meeting the breed and the puppies but do not have a reserved puppy out of the current litters, yes you can book an appointment to come out and meet the little guys BUT you still need to provide me with some basic information and have a chat with me about if this breed is a good choice for you and your family, there is no point in both of us taking the time to for a get together if when you get here, you tell me you want a dog that does not bark or that you live in a apartment downtown or want a low-energy dog.

Note 2- NO you can NOT visit another breeder who has puppies of a different breed, the same day as coming to see me, I am respectful of the fact that this is a rare breed and that most peaple have not meet the breed and would like to before they decide to get a puppy.

However, I close my house down for the first six weeks from company for the health of the puppies and only start puppy visits at six weeks and older but I still need to be very careful that the vistors do not bring things in, please help me in this, and only book a visit if you have

a)fully mature healthy adult dogs at home

b) Do not go to dog parks, or play with other litters of puppies or go to other dogs breeders homes on the same day as coming to my farm.

This photo cracked me up totally, Aunty Gloworm, Aka Greenstone Grima Gloa, was playing with Greenstone Provocative in Pearls Aka(my nickname) Petunia Applebee :)

Petunia wanted to play so Gloa lays down for her, but she is still to big looking, so then she rolls over giving belly, so Petunia starts playing with her ears and Gloa is still letting her be the dominant, and so they are play a adult/puppy version of foot and mouth, the only catch is that the size difference means that little Petunia's whole head can go in Gloa's mouth and here's the proof.. in case you are wondering part of the lesson is teaching to play with your teeth but not hurting anyone while you do so.. this is a important lession for the adults to teach as it helps greatly on teaching the puppy to be gentle with their mouths and that is important when we transfer those lessions to the fact that humans have very soft hides.

I love how the younger females teach and play babysitter and aunty to the puppies, its such a great thing for the puppies to have more then just mom to teach them, they learn different lessons from the whole pack.

Why Yes, we do.. here is Greenstone Blackmore Knight (the #1st in CKC for 2009) who has two of her legs towards her first obedance title owned by Vari, who we got to have visit with yesterday afternoon, showing her very wet self after dock driving after sticks! She is related to both current litters, and given that they are already dipping paws in the water bowl and splashing I think its safe to say, they will all love their water time as well.

So last night at 8:30 ish (mom in bed..and asleep) Dad on computer, and Gloa gives a three bark alert woof, as she stands guard watch out the one big window, two second's later a screaming clucking feast starts outside.. We have a lovely red speckled half banty and half dark leg horn hen who can easily fly over our fences and who for the last week has been sure she wants to settle down and go broody in the bush pile by the brown shed.. Bad choice..

So out the door fly's Dad and Odinn with the mighty Staff (aka Walking stick) and the fox who is running with said chicken in mouth, drop's hen with Odinn hot on his heels, and darts straight threw a spot on the fence that I honestly didn't think anything but a cat could get though.. Chicken runs off into the high grass/bush area.. Fence stops Odinn who runs along it, postive if he would just be allowed to follow that he can make that Fox PAY LOL

So in come Dad and Odinn but its dusk and chicken in hiding.. out goes Freyja, taken to general area and told.. Find it.. now if put on a track she is even better but she does not need one.. Just tell her to find it, and she trusts me that something is there, and she starts weaving back and forth like a bird dog and she finds the chicken and does a freeze. nose right into the big clump of tall grass that the bird is playing dead in.. so she gets called off and Jason catches chicken, who is missing a few feathers and has at least one tooth hole from fox.. so into one of my growout rabbit hutches she goes to recoup, because there is a reason that we call the chickens the mini velociraptors, never put a bird that is bleeding back into the flock unless you want trouble.

So there you have it.. hen is up and eating an drinking this morning, took her a handfull of fresh greens and looks to make a full recovery, thanks to Gloa on guard, Odinn on defence, and Freyja on Point :)

Well the puppies got me up bright and early this morning.. they don't care that its Saturday and I wanted to sleep in.. they loved their mash banana and whole live active culture yogurt mix this morning.. it was gobbled down with great desire but they got it everywhere and so they all needed a wet wipe down of face, chests and paws.. thank goodness for Donut hole puppy feeeding dishes, so that everyone can get their place at the bowl at the same time. Momma dog finished up all leftovers, Freyja has never been very friendly about other dogs coming near her food bowl, but she is so polite to her own puppies, just backs off and lets them eat.. she really has been such a good momma..

Well my kettle is starting to whistle so time for my breakfast and pot of fresh tea and then on to all the extra floor cleaning.. ah one of the not so Joy's of puppies :)

Hi Guys

well, the dream litter is getting so big now, and so much more interactive, they will snuggle and wave a paw at you and crawl/waddle over with their tails wagging, so cute and so much fun, starting to learn all the neat sounds they can make etc.

The pearls are hoots at the moment, they are eating mushy solid food four times a day now, and that means poo's and pee's now greet me every time I walk into where they are LOL, thank goodness for no rugs and puppy pads and lots of extra outside time after eating.. they are getting if figured out a little bit.. eat, then basket then outside for bathroom.. good puppy, good puppy when they go in the grass.. I know that if anyone filmed us, we would seem like silly goose's, first saying .. Go bathroom and then praising and petting and snuggle each one as they go but trust me, it the long run it will be a very good thing :)

So we tried a new plan last night which was hopefully going to let us get a full nights sleep, the pearls wake up and play every couple hours and they wake up the Dream litter who then want to nurse and play as well, so we kept the pearls upstairs last night moving them into the bathroom (its a huge bathroom, used to be a bedroom) and put mom, food, water, pads, stuffies and crate/beds both in the crate and outside of it and baby gated it off.. well the puppies did fine..but Freyja did not.. she has had a aweful time of it as she wants to be with her puppies but she is one of the always bed dogs, and she gave up more then a snuggle on the bed for motherhood, but being removed from the bedroom at night.. well that was a different matter altogether thank you very much.. so in the end, I slept on the couch last night so Jason could get a few hours of solid shut eye..

Otherwise, lets see what is new with the pups for you.. hmmm well everyone has gotten the steel comb run though them at least once this week, nails trimmed in some cases twice, Got to play with Gloa more and even grandma oppa has been seen to allow the odd ear tugging and playing, the pearls are just starting to interact with their toys and are almost walking instead of waddling.

The only other thing that the pups found interesting was their new "made food" they get soften puppy chow but also get peaple food and one meal of farm fresh egg, so their made food was a big pot of farm ground lamb, pot barley and a big bag of farm sqaush all cooked and mixed together with home canned lamb soup broth, it took a little while to figure out how to pick up the barley but the pups loved it, and so healthy for them..

Keepers Ear color, I can track this color in the pedigree back four generations.

Question: How do you tell what the adult coat color on the puppies will be?

Answer: I have found over the years that looking at the back of the ears for what color they are as a puppy gives us our best clues. You need to take these photos in a natural defused lighting, no flash, and no lamp light otherwise it will mess with what the photo shows, so here are photos of the oldest litter , I will do the Dream litter when they are old enough to head outside for some play time.

On average the adult coat color will be either, the same as seen above or one shade darker or lighter then what is seen above.

Well, I know what I am trying to setup and get a photo of.. I want one of those cute photos where it seems that the puppy and kitten are kissing.. well I can see that its going to take awhile to get that photo.

The kitten was a hoot, she is such a friendly little thing, as soon as you pet her, she flops on her side and purrs or tries to play with you but trying to get a puppy to stay still and also interact with her at the same time.. need to try this again with Jason, I really needed three hand min LOL

South Sea Pearl- She is a lovely big girl who enjoy's her cuddle time and is boss female in the litter, having said that, she does respond to noise's by startling but settled very quickly afterwards. Really likes to use her front paws for touching, holding and playing. -Reserved

Minnie Pearl-Sweet is a good term for her, she is a even steady calm pup who takes everything in stride at this time. she is always a few days behind her sibs in terms of figuring things out but if you just make her a couple days younger, she is meeting all her milestone at the right time. This little lady is a lovely pet qaulity puppy.

Provocative in Pearls is very peaple interested at this time and is the first female to waddle over every time she hears my voice or see's me walk by.. she will wave a paw or guggle at me to get me to stop and give a little pat/cuddle. She is a bit more comfortable being alone, and can be found a foot away from the rest of the pile already. The first to start wagging her tail when she see's me.. so! cute. -Reserved

Pearl Keeper- The first one out of the box and into everything! Very interested in peaple and a thinker.. he will sit and look at something and then jump right in, he is very solid with little to no reaction to new things, just looks and then moves forward. He is the most vocal at this time, trying to figure out all the new sounds he can make. He is a natural showman so far, and just loves getting his photo taken!

Dream Litter Names-I think?

Well, this litter is the "Dream a little Dream" litter, as their father is Greenstone Sweet Dreams, I think I have a good idea of the little ones names, I will take feedback from the future owners, so its possable that a name can change.. but here goes so far.

Females
Red and White Pied Female with the split body pattern- Technicolor DreamCoat-Such a interesting pattern that she so needed a name to reflect it :)

Red and White Female with Full White head- DayDream Believer-She looks like a little white cloud with her white head so she is floating little Daydreamer..

Red and White Show marked female- Follow the Dream-I think from what I can see that this is the female that will be stepping into the show rings, and we all know that we are following our dreams when we do that, so it just fit.

Males

Red and White Male One-The big Boy, full blaze, collar and socks- Dreams on Fire- Does it even need a write up.. LOL

Red and White Pied male-Two (pending his owners approval)- Dreamboat -says it all, sweet little guy..

Red and White Male -Three (half white collar)-Dare to Dream- He is a just such a sweet little guy, he is the one that is the single pup on the website, and I am going to Dare to Dream that he will live up to what I saw as a newborn in that photo.

Red and White Male -Four-(right white ear tip)- California Dreamin- Hubby picked this one and sings him the song.. and how can I resist such a sweet gesture.

Healing power of puppy Breath!

Last night, we wormed the sheep, and I got a really good knock to my jaw by one of my big ewe's well at about 1am, woke up with a wicked tooth ache, took over my jaw, whole left side of face and was so painful, it was not funny.. Jason was a doll and got hot compress's and rubbed feet in the dark, as I could not stand the light ahh.. so after a double dose of pain meds, I am laying there feeling like I want to cry but it would just hurt more to do so..

Then Jason brings me a puppy.. and lays it on my neck.. snuffle, snuffle and back to sleep she goes.. Little Pied female with the color on one side of her body and white on the other.. (really need to name the dream litter) and I can't say that it took out all the pain but it was so comforting.. laying in the dark, feeling her warmth, and little sleep baby twitches, smelling that sweet, sweet baby puppy smell, feeling that soft baby fur.. it really helped, and after about 20 min, I was able to drift back off to sleep.. so tired today, after I get all the morning chores done, I am so having a nap.

Poor hubby was up for a good hour and he of course went to work, no nap for him today, will have to make a extra special dinner to say thanks tonight..

Dream a Little Dream Litter -One Week old

Hello Folks

Wow, a week has just flown by, and the Dreamers are doing well, Momma is a excellent mother and has lots of milk. I have to laugh at the one pied female, she has perfect pied markings on her show side, with patches of color on both eyes, but its like a line was drawn down her back and she is totally white on her non-show side in regards to her body color.. very different, I know that we have split faces in the breed but this is the first "split body" that I have seen. In the boys, I have one male that is just a huge boy, his brothers are all gaining nicely but he is going to be a big one that is for sure. The females are all quite even in size.

The Pearls Eyes are starting to open!

Hi Folks

Just a quick update for the moment, and photos to follow soon afterwards, the Pearls are starting to crack their eyes open and their early stimulations are going well. Starting to lift themselves up a tiny bit to push themselves off the bedding. Everyone looks great, and even Minnie Pearl is getting so big now, she is starting to catch right up.

I am loving the snuggle time now, they nuzzle necks, give kisses and nurse on noses and ears when given the chance.. so so cute.. little red and white girls photos did not turn out and I am recharging the battery, will get photos of her up soon.

Kitten looking for a forever home!

Hello Folks

Ok, so this little one is not going to be ready for a new home for another six to eight weeks, but I have one Solid (no White) calico female kitten, she is black and orange, and appears to be a med coat in type, not really long nor really short.. Unknown parantage.. Free to a approved home if you want to do all medical yourself (I will deworm her twice) or Available for the direct cost of her first Medical check up and vaccine. This is the only kitten available, she was the only kitten born in this litter.

I am raising her in the house and she will be friendly with other cats and dogs, she will be very well handled, litterbox trained and I am looking for a indoor house cat home for her only, (I don't mind if she goes out in the yard on a leash or in a outside cat area etc) I would perfer a home that does NOT declaw their cats. I plan on spaying the mother as soon as possable, and would be open to considering placing them as a set if anyone is interested.

I have my own house cats, and a number of drop off/stray farm cats that I look after(if you are looking for a barn cat, let me know), and while I will provided her with a forever home if needed, I would much perfer to find a good home for her.

Well, Folda (aka Tera) was up and down all night long and certainly was keeping me awake most of the night, I am hopeful that her little ones will come soon. Got this super cute photo of Chase hanging out with his toys at his new home.. what a handsome pup!

Good Morning

Have had a few requests from folks on when am I going to get new single puppy photos of each baby up, so here is one each to hold you over till their first week old photos.

Wow, I had forgot how hard it is to get a good photo of a almost solid black tricolor puppy, once she can stand up, and show her white feet/chest it will help.

Everyone is doing really well, nice steady gains from all of them.

Morning Folks

Well, clearly Freyja (BIS BBE CKC Ch Greenstone Black Pearl) has lots of milk, as the pups have not dipped at all, and have been making a nice steady gain since birth, and we already have nice solid fat bottom pups.. She is a very protective momma when it comes to the other dogs but very good about allowing me access to the little ones.
